Havdalah & A Night of Jewish History at Temple Habonim with Professor Gary Zola

Over the course of American history, the nation’s Jewish citizenry has played a truly outstanding role in the ongoing effort to actualize the lofty rhetoric enshrined in the nation’s founding documents. From the colonial period to the present day, American rabbis and prominent lay leaders have been champions for the expansion of religious liberty, freedom of conscience, and minority rights. Professor Zola will introduce us to the many ways in which American Jewry fought for “equal footing” under the law for themselves and, in the process of doing so, for others.

This session will introduce participants to several remarkable primary source documents – including rare audiovisual source material from the American Jewish Archives – that will illustrate American Jewry’s historically significant contributions to the process of broadening civil liberties in the American nation.
