The spring Temple Emanu-El Rosen Library book discussion will take place Sunday, April 3, from 3-4:30 p.m.

Jonathan Kaufman, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author, will speak about his latest book, “The Last Kings of Shanghai: The Rival Jewish Dynasties That Helped Create Modern China.” A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

In the book, two ambitious Jewish families, the Sassoons and the Kadoories, originally from Baghdad, become dynasties in China. Learn about their remarkable history, how they stood astride business and politics for more than 175 years and  joined together to rescue 18,000 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazism and how this holds a key to understanding the present day.

Kaufman has written on and reported about China for 30 years. He served as China bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal and was executive editor of Bloomberg News. He is currently the director of the School of Journalism at Northeastern University in Boston.
