Kosher meals available for children under 18

Posted

On May 8, 200 local children received Kosher Grab-and-Go breakfasts and lunches from Ahava Catering, located at Congregation Beth Sholom in Providence, through a program of the Providence Parks Department.  This was the result of hours of work by the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, Rabbi Peretz Scheinerman, dean of the Providence Hebrew Day School, Rachel Schloss, a PHDS parent volunteer, Chef Freda Ronkin, owner of Ahava Catering, and Rabbi Shaul Gallor of Rhode Island Kosher.  The free meals program is equivalent to that of the Providence public schools. Each week, on Friday, parents pick up meals for four days and on Tuesday for three days resulting in seven days of Kosher meals for all children ages 18 and under regardless of need. The meals are certified by Rhode Island Kosher.

Knowing that not everyone will be interested in all that is being offered, the above organizations have partnered with The Louis and Goldie Chester Full Plate Kosher Food Pantry to donate the unused food to those who might need it.

This is the first time that PHDS has been able to arrange for a free meals program and the hope is that once the coronavirus crisis has abated the same groups will be able to work together to introduce a free or reduced-cost meal plan at Providence Hebrew Day School.
