Temple Emanu-El Spring Book Discussion : "Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood"

Author Mark Oppenheimer will lecture in person and on Zoom at Temple Emanu-El, in Providence, on Sunday, June 11, from 4:00-5:30pm, about the devastating shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, in October 2018 and the aftermath of the tragedy in the Synagogue’s old, established Jewish community. He will also discuss the compelling national implications of the deadly anti-Semitic attack. Oppenheimer will base his lecture on his recent book, Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood.
Oppenheimer received a B.A. in History and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Yale University. He has taught at Stanford, Wesleyan, Wellesley, NYU, Boston College, and Yale, where he served for 15 years as the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. From 2010-2016 he wrote a biweekly religion column for The New York Times. He has also written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Slate, The Nation, Tablet, and numerous other publications, and he is the author of 5 books. He hosted Unorthodox, a Jewish-themed podcast, for 8 years. Oppenheimer lives with his family in New Haven, Connecticut.
