Question: When the mourning ribbon is torn, what is the reason?

K.G., West Warwick

Dear K.G.,

There seem to be as many answers to this question as there are rabbis. The answer that most appear to agree upon is that the tear in a ribbon, scarf, shirt or jacket symbolizes a tear in your heart for the loss of a loved one. It is an outward sign of mourning. It is only partially torn to symbolize a change in the fabric of our lives. The person is not torn away completely. You still have your love and your memories that will always stay with you.
