Isaac Mizrahi thinks you will be surprised at his cabaret show.
Pleasantly surprised.
He and a six-piece jazz band will be at New Bedford’s Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on March 5 for two shows. The Zeiterion is newly reopened after a 19-month restoration project. He and his show have been traveling the country and playing at New York City’s Café Carlyle Theatre to rave reviews.
You might be wondering if you read this correctly. Isaac Mizrahi. Isn’t he the fashion designer? Wasn’t he on Project Runway? Yes. He is all of that and more: television presenter, singer, actor, writer, podcaster and cabaret singer.
“This is a funny, fun show,” he said in a recent phone interview. “People just seem to love it.”
The show is part autobiographical, part what he’s going through and part songs. “I hope it’s compelling. It’s about issues people can relate to. There is a sense of humor.”
He said he’s been singing in clubs for 27 or 28 years. And the band, which he calls incredible, has been together since 1998. “It’s a very jazzy take on music,” he said.
“I take my energy from the audience,” he said. He does a little singing, some storytelling and some jokes and throws in a little politics …all in a humorous way.
“You should go see it. There is something about seeing a live show,” he said. “It is so much better than sitting and streaming.”
The shows are at 7 and 9 p.m. on March 5. The 7 p.m. show is sold out, but tickets are available for the 9 p.m. performance. Go to zeiterion.org or call 508-994-2900 for more information.
