Israeli Culture Night: Multi-Gender Hebrew: Creating a New Space in the Hebrew Language

with Michal Shomer

Posted
Gender plays a very different role in Hebrew language structure than in English. This presentation will explore some of the most pressing challenges in the Hebrew language in a changing world that is becoming more open and progressive. Michal Shomer will explore why it is so important to use Hebrew in an inclusive and gender-neutral way. She will discuss Multi-Gender Hebrew--a new set of Hebrew letters facilitating multi-gender reading and writing. Multi-Gender Hebrew makes women present in the Hebrew language and forms a linguistic space for non-binary identities, promoting equality as its main purpose.

Bio: Michal Shomer (she/her), creator and designer of Multi-Gender Hebrew; has a Bachelor of Design degree in Visual Communication Design from Holon Institute of Technology (HIT), one of the top universities in Israel for design studies. After publishing a free version of her new letters so users can use Multi-Gender Hebrew on their computers, Shomer is now working on extending support for Multi-Gender Hebrew on additional platforms and promoting gender equality by giving lectures on the subject. She is also managing Multi-Gender Hebrew's social media accounts, including a Facebook page with over 10K followers, and she is working on various other initiatives and design related projects.
