JERI’s gift brightens Hanukkah for over 200 elderly Rhode Islanders

Jewish Collaborative Services’ Jewish Eldercare of Rhode Island (JERI) program, in coordination with Friends of Jewish Seniors, has delivered Hanukkah gifts to over 200 Jewish residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities across the state. The gifts included a flameless, battery-powered menorah, which one resident called “a godsend, since we can’t use candles here” in her thank you note.

“This is such a meaningful gift for our residents in nursing homes and assisted living all over Rhode Island,” said Susie Adler, JERI coordinator.

With the menorahs was a card wishing a happy Hanukkah to residents and reminding them to call Susie Adler or Dori Adler, JERI activity programmer, if they want to chat.

The gifts are just one of the many ways JERI continues to keep in touch during this “no-visitation” time, which has now been extended into 2021.

“We have received so many heartfelt thanks from residents after receiving this gift. This is the best Hanukkah gift we have given,” said Patty Harwood, chief of programs.

In thanking JERI for the gift, one recipient said, “It gets a little scary and anxiety ridden with those getting sick, and you brought a ray of sunshine, and for that I will thank you even more.”
