Teens have fresh new programming to try this fall

All across the country, the life of a teen is busy, busy, busy. The teen engagement department of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island has created a variety of opportunities for teens to get involved easily and that fit their individual interests.

Students can choose to attend a five-week mini course offered on Sunday mornings or attend a communitywide teen evening event, created in cooperation with local youth groups.

Providence HaZamir choir, a local chapter of HaZamir: the International Jewish High School Choir is a great choice for singers. The choir will meet weekly and participate in two weekends in New York.

After-school programming is available, including a conversational Hebrew language class for pre-teens. Local internships and community service opportunities can be arranged for individuals. Interfaith exchange, a program run by Brown University students, and an SAT preparation course are also included in the program.

“There is a lot flexibility to our programming,” said Jana Brenman, director of Teen Engagement for the Jewish Alliance. “There are many different ways to be involved and meet other teens. We hope there’s something for everyone. And we hope the programs will help develop Jewish identity.”

That flexibility is key to the program this year. Brenman said that she hopes teens will consider trying just one course or activity. Signups will be available throughout the year.  “If you play a fall sport, you wait and sign up for a mini course in the winter,” she said. “Everyone is welcome to bring a friend.”

A general orientation takes place Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the library at Temple Emanu-El, 99 Taft Ave., Providence. Everybody who’s interested can come and learn about the programs. Registration for the mini courses will be available.

“We’re excited to expand our programming with our temple partners and youth groups,” said Brenman. All teens are welcome to participate, regardless of religious affiliation or synagogue membership.
