Witness to History

The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, then-prime minister of Israel, was one of the most dramatic events of the 1990s, sending shockwaves throughout the Jewish Diaspora. The Dec. 7, 1995, issue of the Jewish Herald shows David Cicilline placing a candle on Rabin’s grave in Mount Herzl Cemetery, Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of mourners, including 80 heads of state, attended Rabin’s funeral, which took place only two days after Rabin was shot and killed trying to enter his car on Nov. 4, 1995. By coincidence, Cicilline was on vacation in Israel at the time, after having served his first year in Rhode Island’s House of Representatives.
