In this episode, journalist Emma Newbery is joined by Jewish Book Council author, advocate and trauma therapist Dr. Sara Glass (she/they) to discuss Sara’s memoir Kissing Girls on Shabbat. This story is one of triumph over forces both internal and external – it details a path out of the strict Hasidic Jewish community in which Sara was raised, into an expansive and celebratory exploration of queerness, and a future of continued advocacy for and dedicated treatment of those who feel trapped or silenced in strict religious communities, as Sara puts it “because of who they are.” This episode is being released in conjunction with Sara’s upcoming visit to the Bonnie & Donald Dwares JCC on March 6, 2025.
Content warning: discussions of trauma, mental illness and suicide.
