CRANSTON, R.I. — Touro Fraternal Association awarded grants of $5,000 to Ella Finkelstein, Caroline Kaluzny and Charlotte Kaluzny to aid in their pursuit of a college degree.

The association’s Student Financial Aid Committee considers each candidate’s grades, family financial need, other sources of financial assistance they receive, a written personal statement and letters of recommendation to determine who are the most meritorious.

Finkelstein is a freshman at Ohio University, where she is studying acting and dance/choreography. In addition to her acting pursuits, she has taught classes at the Talent Factory, and she did community service at Franklin Farm.

The Kaluznys are the first set of siblings to win Touro grants in the same year. In high school, Caroline Kaluzny took on leadership roles as class vice president and student council vice president. In addition, she runs her own baking business and creates online film and digital content, reviewing movies. Her online account has more than 20,000 followers.

Charlotte Kaluzny volunteered at nursing homes, developmental centers, hospitals and other health care settings. She qualified as a certified nursing assistant. Both are freshmen at Emmanuel College.

Since the establishment of the student grant and loan program in 1981, Touro has made financial awards to ease the cost of higher education for its members and their families.

Touro Fraternal, based in Cranston, is the largest Jewish men’s fraternal organization in the Northeast. Founded in 1917, the association offers social activities for its members and guests. It also gives back to the community through dozens of Jewish and secular causes.
